Willamette Falls Riverwalk

Oregon City, Clackamas County

Willamette Falls is the largest waterfall in the Pacific Northwest, but it’s been closed to the public for more than a century. With the Willamette Falls Riverwalk project, that’s going to change.

With this project, the 22-acre industrial site is rezoned to allow a mix of shops, restaurants, hotels, offices and housing. It includes a network of walking and biking routes connecting the Willamette Falls Riverfront with the rest of downtown. It provides public spaces that create unique visitor experiences. And it provides public access to the Falls, bringing tourists from all over the state, the region and beyond.

But before all that, a Hazardous Building Materials Survey and an environmental assessment were needed in order to understand the contaminants left at a site that had been industrial since 1829. And cleanup and removal of those contaminants had to be completed. The project was awarded $60,000 in Lottery funds to help with this.
