Jackpot games payout options

Cash or annuity?

If you win a jackpot playing Powerball, Mega Millions or Oregon’s Game Megabucks, you are able to choose between a one-time cash payment or receiving 30 annual installments. This choice can be made when you come to the Lottery office to claim your prize.

You also have the option of validating your winning ticket at the Lottery office and then take time to consider how to take your prize. This choice must be made within 60 days of the date the winning ticket was validated.

If you choose the one-time cash payment, you will receive one-half of the advertised prize in one lump sum.

Winners of a Powerball, Mega Millions or Oregon’s Game Megabucks jackpot prize who choose the 30-year annuity, will fill out a beneficiary designation form. This form designates who will receive the remaining annuity payments if the winner passes away before the 30-year annuity payments have ended.

Oregon's Game Megabucks annuity

Oregon’s Game Megabucks annuity prizes are paid evenly over 30 years. If you win a $30 million Oregon’s Game Megabucks jackpot, for example, and opt for the 30-year annuity, you will receive $1 million a year, for 30 years (before taxes).

Powerball annuity

If you win a Powerball jackpot and select the annuity option, you are guaranteed to receive 30 graduated payments over 29 years. The annual payments for both games increase by 5% until the 30th and final payment. The 30 payments added up equal the value of the annuity.

Mega Millions annuity

If you win a Mega Millions jackpot and select the annuity option, you are guaranteed to receive 30 graduated payments over 29 years. The annual payments for both games increase by 5% until the 30th and final payment. The 30 payments added up equal the value of the annuity.

Tax withholdings

State tax withholding

The Oregon Lottery will withhold an 8% state tax on all prizes of $1,500 and more. This means that the Lottery will pay your prize minus the 8% state tax. This is in compliance with a state law that went into effect Jan. 1, 2018.

What about federal tax?
Non-Video Lottery prizes over $5,000 will have both the 8% state and 24% federal taxes withheld. Video Lottery prizes only have the 8% state tax withheld.

Will the Lottery give me a W2G for my records?

Of course! You will receive it at the time of prize payment.

What if I win and I am a Non-resident alien?
The Oregon Lottery is required to withhold 30% federal withholding tax from all prize amounts. Oregon tax withholding is 8% on prizes of $1,500.00 and more.

The Oregon Lottery attempts to ensure that the winning numbers for each drawing is posted correctly on this web site. However, posted numbers are unofficial.
